Governor of Bayelsa State, His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri today, formally inaugurated the Flood and Erosion Control Directorate in the State
The committee which is saddled with the responsibility of proffering lasting solution to the flooding and erosion problem was set up on the the 30th of March, 2023.
Governor Diri charged the committee to write their names in the annals of history of Bayelsa State by developing sustainable flood management mechanisms, stating that they have been carefully selected to be in the committee.
You must address the threat of flood and erosion with utmost priority that it deserves, develop sustainable flood management practices, introduce erosion control techniques and design flood resistant structures among other structures that can be adopted to mitigate the risk involved in the very near future,” Governor Diri stated..

The flooding and erosion in the Niger Delta are perennial challenges that must be tackled headlong hence, the state owned media outlets would be readily available to support the Directorate achieve their mandate. the Directorate has identified higher grounds for flood shades and would improve on the desilting work carried out by the Directorate the previous year for the free flow of flood water into rivers and creeks in the state.
The Directorate has made efforts to collaborate with relevant state and federal agencies, including the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to achieve set objectives, appreciated the officers for their resolve to partner the Directorate for effective flood mitigation.
The Commander, of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Soroh, Commodore Nanmar Lakan, said flooding was a common natural disaster that has had a devastating impact on Nigerians, hence their move to familiarise themselves with the Directorate and render support, especially in the areas of evacuating flood victims as well as secure lives and property in the waterways during flooding.
